Elyria is a city located in Lorain County , Ohio . As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 55,953. It is the County Seat of Lorain County . GEOGRAPHY Elyria is located at 41°22'24" North, 82°6'6" West (41.373396, -82.101692). According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 51.6 Km&2 (19.9 Mi&2 ). 51.5 km&2 (19.9 mi&2) of it is land and 0.1 km&2 (0.04 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 0.15% water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 55,953 people, 22,409 households, and 14,834 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 1,086.2/km&2 (2,813.7/mi&2). There were 23,841 housing units at an average density of 462.8/km&2 (1,198.9/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.35% White , 14.17% African American , 0.27% Native American , 0.61% Asian , 0.02% Pacific Islander , 0.95% from Other Races , and 2.64% from two or more races. 2.78% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 22,409 households out of which 31.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.4% were Married Couples living together, 15.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.8% were non-families. 28.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
