Information About

El Camino Real High School

El Camino Real High School is known for its Academic Decathlon team. The team won national titles in 1998, 2001, 2004, and 2005. With their fourth national title in 2005, the school had back-to-back national victory, the first for any school in 20 years. This was the first team in Academic Decathlon history to win state and national competitions as a wild card team, as they lost the city competition but were allowed to continue as a wild card. Their 2004 Victory marked another first in USAD history, the first pair of siblings to win the national title both with the same school. 2004 Member Adrian Wittenberg was the sister of 2001 member Alan Wittenberg. Both contributed as varsity members. The team has been criticized of late because of its method of team selection. The claims have, as of yet, been unsubstantiated.

Former San Francisco 49ers player Allan Kennedy graduated from El Camino Real.

In the late 1970s, El Camino Real was noted for its marching band, which has won four of the first six Los Angeles City Marching Band championships (1976, 1977, 1979, 1980).

The school also has a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps unit that has been honored with distinguished unit (top 20% in the nation) three times in a row. They have qualified for the state-wide competition in 2006 and aspire to go to nationals in 2007.

In the early 21st century, El Camino Real's boys tennis team gained notoriety by winning five consecutive city championships from 2000-2004.

El Camino Real also has a notable Science Bowl team. They compete in one of the toughest Science Bowl regions in the United States, at the Los Angeles Department Of Water And Power . In 2001 the team placed 4th in the Los Angeles region, and in 2006 the team placed 2nd. El Camino has also won the Envirothon regional competition 6 consecutive years in a row placing 2 teams last year at the State division at 2nd place and 5th place.

The school also has a student Webpage which can be located at http://ecr.lausd.k12.ca.us/.

Subject: Application for Leadership Academy
Date: 26 April 2006

Dear Sir,

This memo concerns my interest in going to the leadership academy of 2006. I have a major appealing feeling towards this journey that the leadership academy would begin. The reasons that create the interest that I have towards this academy are the next challenge, to prove the expectations of me, and a legacy I want to leave at this unit.

Ever since I was born, I was presented with challenges. Some of it even being close to death, “but what doesn’t kill you can only help you.” To give you a little history on myself, I was born with a cleft lip and a whole in my heart. Ever since then, I have to work hard to keep up with my peers and by going to this academy my skills and potential can be filled. This academy would be the next challenge for me on the road to my life. This road might have been rocky and definitely dangerous but this program has progressed me from the day I entered in the program two years and seven months ago. Not only would be the first African American, but I would probably be the first to go through such hardships that I have faced and still succeed.

As some people know, I am partially African American. This is something I am proud of, and I want to be leave a memory at this unit to either be the first or be one of the few. I was taught to be proud of my race; I am not saying to be against other. What I am saying is that, to be proud of what you have not what you want. Some people think that being born of color is a disadvantage. This is not the way I feel. I feel that if u you hid what you are the real you isn’t being shown. I feel by going to this academy, I could be bringing up the standard for those to follow.

I want to for fill the expectation of me and the potential I have been told I have. I know in my first year I went up for promotion very fast but since I wasn’t very involved in the unit, I didn’t receive the meritious promotion at the end of the year to C/PO2. Since then I have learned and did my best to keep up with my class. In the event of my selection, I would like to excel past my peers to show them how good I really am. I do somewhat of that now but I know in my heart I could be doing tremendously better, and I would like for you to put a little faith in me because I would like to even prove to you, what I am capable. I know that the leadership is the key to this success that so far I can only dream of.
I also participate on the armed drill team. This is the list of awards that I have received on the team this year. At the Chaffey field meet, the exhibition team received 3rd place, at the La Habra field meet we received 2nd exhibition. At this field meet I also was named top five in the armed tap out drill. At the Encino field meet, the armed drill team took 2nd place in exhibition drill and 3rd place in basic armed drill for the first time and at Area 11, the armed exhibition team took 4th place overall. I also participated in the postal competition for the armed drill team. I was also picked for the armed/unarmed combination performance for awards night. I am an instrumental part of this group.

Another team I participate on is the academic team. The academic team has taken 1st at Chaffey, 2nd at La Habra, 1st at Encino, and 2nd at Area 11. My major accomplishment on this team I scored 3rd overall individually at Area 11. I scored the highest on my recent postal exam, the greater L.A. postal. I also received the first place individually at mini-boot camp. I have completed a question bank that was given to all the team which helped the team improve our score. I am orchestrating a plan to have all the team answer the questions in the books over the summer, so that we can study to get better scores in the future.

Thank you for taking out the time to read this memo, and I sincerely hope that you will consider me for leadership academy.

Respectfully,

C/MCPO Andrew T. Robinson
