Egyptian God Cards

Like other cards in ''Duel Monsters'', each card possesses the powers of the beasts they represent, and thus they are considered the "ultimate weapons" in many a duel. If used in the wrong hands, they can cause legitimate injury or even death.

CARDS

The following table is a summary of the God Cards' statistics and effects (the Type and Attribute are from the printed edition by Konami, the effects are from the anime and manga). Note that their attribute is printed as Divine, but since there are Dark God Cards with the same attribute but dark version, I wrote it as (Light) Divine, referring to the background.

Obelisk , Osiris , and Ra are named for items in Egyptian Mythology , while Slifer is an Inside Joke , named after Roger Slifer , a producer of the English language Animé adaptation. In the Filipino animé, Ra's name is changed to Apollo , the Greek Equivalent of Ra. This is most likely because of either dubbing purposes or the lack of knowledge of Egyptian Mythology. Each card has a unique-colored card back, different from all other cards - Obelisk blue, Slifer red, and Ra yellow. The God cards and their associated colors are also used as a basis of the dormitories of Duel Academy in '' Yu-Gi-Oh! GX ''. Each of the God Cards are said to represent two poles in the universe: Obelisk with "light" and "darkness", Slifer "good" and "evil", and Ra "heaven" and "earth".

The God Cards are typically banned in Real-world Competition , due to their unique color card backs, overwhelming abilities, and the fact that the cards themselves state that they cannot to be used in competition. Thus, they are cards that are noramlly only useful for collection and trading. Interestingly, the Japanese versions of the God Cards have much of the inscription printed in English (with the above statement the only text in Japanese on the card).

Because of the extent of their abilities, the abilities of the cards are not printed on the cards themselves, although its wide exposure as rare and powerful cards makes their abilities well-known. In particular, the following hold for all God Cards:

  • This card cannot leave play due to the effect of a spell card.

  • This card is unaffected by most trap cards or monster effects (those that do affect them, which are certain continuous effects, last only 1 turn). The effects of a God Card of higher hierarchy do affect this card.

  • Control of this card cannot change.

  • The effects of spell cards that do not cause this card to leave play last for only one turn.

  • This card cannot be destroyed in battle by a God Card of lower hierarchy, unless multiple attack simultaneously.

  • (Also, all God Cards have the attribute (Light) Divine, the type Divine Beast, and a level of 10. To normal summon a God Card, you must sacrifice 3 monsters.)

There, however, remains several disputes over the abilities of God Cards, due to the way they are used in the anime. Some contend that in addition to the "Divine Beast" type, Obelisk is considered to be a Warrior, Slifer a Dragon, and Ra a Machine (mainly due to its machine-like appearance). In an episode of the anime, Yugi Muto's ''Buster Blader'' gains 500 points when Slifer is on the field, and it only gains points from Dragon-type monsters. In the Gameboy games ''The Sacred Cards'' and ''Reshef of Destruction'', the God cards are listed as being of Divine Attribute, with the above sub-types. There has been no resolution to the ambiguities, largely as the real-world cards were not meant for use in competition.

The God Cards are also the subjects of many ''Yu-Gi-Oh!'' video games, especially among those that uses the Battle City tournament as a backdrop. However, the God Cards are in many cases unplayable, or are playable with greatly reduced abilities.

In the Millennium World storyline, the three Egyptian Gods can be combined to form the ''Creator of Light — Harakhti'' (光の創造神ホルアケティ - ''Hikari no Souzoushin - Horuaketi''), after the nameless Pharaoh recovers his real name. Harakhiti would then destroy the evil Zorc , freeing Egypt from its dark power, and imparts key information about the final battle that was lost in time.

In '''', Slifer and Ra combined with Obelisk to form a monster with infinite strength. This allowed Yugi to destroy Anubis' ''Thinein the Great Sphinx'' with the ultimate attack, Titan Firestorm, winning the duel. However, this may have just been Obelisk's special ability. There is an explanation for the times Obelisk got infinate ATK. In the movie, he sacrificed the two other Gods, so this should give extra power. And when he sacrificed the God Slime, (which counted for two tributes), as Kaiba said (in the Japanese), it was a miricle of the God's anger (which would mean that he's never experienced this before, and as a user of Obelisk, this can be said to ''not'' be his usual effect).

THE REAL GOD CARDS

The real God Cards have three versions. The first one is printed in Japanese, the second one in Japanese and English, and the third one in English only.

The first version of the God Cards was released by , 2000 . The second version was released by Konami on April 17 , 2003 as special pack-in cards in the GBA game ''Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters International — Worldwide Edition'' (遊戯王デュエルモンスターズインターナショナル ~ワールドワイドエディション~), the Japanese version of the English GBA game ''Yu-Gi-Oh! Worldwide Edition: Stairway to the Destined Duel''.

Unlike the previous versions, the third version of the God Cards was not released at the same time. One of them, "The Winged Dragon of Ra", was included as a limited edition card in the '' published on November 23 , 2004 by VIZ Media . The last one, "Obelisk the Tormentor", is currently being released (as of May 2005 ) as a free gift given to the subscribers of '' Shonen Jump ''.

DARK GOD CARDS

The Dark God Cards are introduced in the ‘Yu-Gi-Oh R’ Manga. They are just about the same as the standard God Cards, but have an attribute of (Dark) Divine, rather than the (Light) Divine that the standard God Cards have. They have the same shared effects, but different individual effects.

To be noted is that there exists a real tournament-legal version of Devil's Dread Root.

Dark/Fiend, Level 10, 4000/4000

This card cannot be Special Summoned. This card can only be Normal Summoned by offering three Monsters on your side of the Field as a Tribute. As long as this card is face-up on the Field, the ATK and DEF of all other Monsters are halved.
