Educational Primer

The Educational Primer features heavily in Neal Stephenson's book "The Diamond Age". The book replaces all forms of adult guidance and schooling in guiding a child's development. The primer will adapt to both the child's surroundings and state of mind to provide as best as possible development for the child's mind.

The primer is a Hybrid Computer and ractive (short for 'interactive') experience. The ractive dialogue appears to be created by the primer and only read by an online, connected actor. This was selected as a solution to a computer being unable to convincingly simulate a real person in its dialogues with the child.

The primer eventually propels Nell, a highly disadvantaged child, into the elite of the future society and may represent a belief by Stephenson that a high quality of education is able to overcome societal disadvantage.
