Baird led the largest single battalion ever to leave the province in 1940 as superintendent of the Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Corps. After the war Baird helped form a new town site which became Gander . Both a Gander street and local trail are named in his honour. Baird was invested as a member of the Order Of Newfoundland And Labrador in 2004. ORDER OF NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR The Order of Newfoundland and Labrador is the highest honour of the province, recognizing individuals who have achieved excellence in a field of endeavour benefiting Newfoundland and Labrador and its residents.
