Information About

Earl Of Clanricarde

The first creation was in 1543 for Ulick Na GCeann Burke , who was also created ''Baron Dunkellin''. The Fourth Earl was created ''Earl of St Albans'' (1628), ''Viscount Galway'' (1628), ''Viscount Tunbridge'' (1624), ''Baron Imanney'' (1628), and ''Baron Somerhill'' (1624), all in the Peerage Of England . All these English titles became extinct on the death of the fifth earl, who had been created Marquess of Clanricarde in 1646.

The twelth earl was again created Marquess of Clanricarde, but this became extinct upon his death, while the earldom passed to John De Burgh in 1797, who was created '''Earl of Clanricarde''' again in 1800, with a special remainder, failing his male issue, to his daughters by primogeniture, and the heirs male of their bodies.

The fourteenth earl of the first creation and second of the second creation was created Marquess of Clanricarde (1825) in the Peerage of Ireland and '''Baron Somerhill''' (1826) in the Peerage Of The United Kingdom .

On the death of the 2nd Marquess of Clanricarde in 1916 the male issue of the 13th Earl of the first creation became extinct, and the 1800 creation passed in accordance with the special remainder to the family of the Marquesses Of Sligo , who were descended from the 13th Earl's eldest daughter Hester Catherine, who had married the 2nd Marquess Of Sligo . All other associated titles became extinct.
