Earl Of Abergavenny (east Indiaman)




This 1440 ton vessel was built in Northfleet , Kent in 1797 to carry cargo for the British East India Company . She sank in February 1805 with the loss of over 250 lives.

Nowdays, she lies in 16 m (50 ft) of water and less than 3 km (2 miles) from the beach at Weymouth . There are several rows of Wood en posts sticking out the sand. Visibility is rarely more than 3 m (10 ft). The temperature ranges from 5 to 16 °C depending on the Season .


ARCHAEOLOGY

In 2005 the Weymouth LUNAR Society received the Nautical Archaeology Society's Adopt-a-Wreck award for their work in surveying, monitoring and interpreting this shipwreck.
