Dwight Kurt Schrute is a Fictional Character on the NBC 's '' The Office '' portrayed by Rainn Wilson and based on Gareth Keenan , a character on The BBC Original ''Office'' Series . At Scranton , Pennsylvania paper-goods distribution company Dunder-Mifflin, Schrute is a salesman, and the Titular Assistant Regional Manager (formerly Assistant to the Regional Manager) under Michael Scott . INTERESTS Dwight used to be a volunteer sheriff trained in the art of Surveillance , but resigned on his own accord when he helped Michael cheat on a drug test. Dwight fancies himself a Survivalist and, based on his dog-eat-dog views on Health Care and his belief that a hero is "someone who kills people that wish him harm", has a bit of an Objectivist streak to him. Dwight's a pop culture and sci-fi buff who has expressed fanship of '' Harry Potter '', '' The Lord Of The Rings '', '' Star Wars '' and '' Lost ''. His all-time favorite film is '' The Crow ''. Also, he has been seen wearing a World Anime Expo 2002 t-shirt, suggesting that he attended this (ficticious) Anime convention. He is also obsessed with the new Battlestar Galactica . He listens to Froggy 101, a Scranton country-western station, and participated in a Rock 107 call-in contest. Dwight served as DJ for the eighth annual Dundie Awards and his music tastes include William Joel 's " We Didn't Start The Fire " and R.E.M. 's "Everybody Hurts". Dwight loves Count Chocula . Dwight's sporting streak tends toward Paintball , Karate , and Lasertag . He also has a " Crossbow range" in his house. Dwight's interested in Muscle Car s and a drives a maroon mid- 1980s Pontiac Firebird he restored. He knows how to make traditional baby dolls from corn husks. Dwight is musically talented as well. He has been known to jam on the Guitar and the Recorder . His repertoire includes " Greensleeves ", " The Longest Time ", " Mambo No. 5 " and " Teach Your Children ". He always wears a Casio calculator watch. Dwight used to have a medical condition that turned his urine green. COWORKER RELATIONS Dwight sucks up to his boss and often jumps in on Michael's ill-conceived schemes, including an old-fashioned raid of accounting by sales. He craves authority, and is thrilled when asked to handle any task, such as choosing a health plan and being appointed as an honorary security guard for the office building. He has also been known to assume authority even when it is not handed to him. It appears that Dwight hero-worships Michael (viewing him as model for success) and considers him "the one man I've been hired to protect." Dwight feels threatened by Ryan Howard , who Michael often assigns tasks to, and he continues his resentment towards Ryan throughout the show. Though nearly as sexist and bigoted as Michael, Dwight is in no denial about his views. Dwight's rigid adherence to rules irritates others at times, such as his immediate need to noisily shred documents and credit cards. Co-workers Jim Halpert and Pam Beesly frequently play pranks on him. Dwight secretly dates fellow employee Angela Martin. FAMILY Little is revealed about Dwight's parents except that his father — also named Dwight Schrute — battled high blood pressure and obesity all his life, but often went hunting with his son. Dwight lives on his family's 60-acre farm, where he grows Beets with cousin Mose, which they sell to local stores and restaurants. Mose and Dwight hold annual Halloween bonfires, and teenagers have been known to use the farm for sex. According to Dwight, the Schrute family produces thirsty babies. Dwight's maternal grandfather fought in World War II and ended up in an Allied Prison Camp . This implies that his grandfather was a German Soldier .
