HISTORY

Beginning around 1995, the New York Times began a spinoff of sorts to its traditional print format called The New York Times Electronic Media Company. The purpose of this new venture was to develop new products and alternate distribution channels for The New York Times. Over the next several years, the new company's television unit (New York Times Television) began developing several series for predominantly cable networks such as TLC , The Discovery Channel , CNN , and Showtime . Non cable networks also picked up programming such as ABC, and PBS in the United States.

In 2002, New York Times Television, and Discovery Communications announced a joint venture to run a new cable channel titled "Discovery Civilization". Later in that same year, the channel was rebranded as "The Discovery Times Channel".
