POPULARITY Desert Drink is a popular mixed drink in the Hyde Park, Chicago area, especially among University Of Chicago students. Its popularity is largely due to the cheap price of both the Arizona Iced Tea and the aforementioned vodkas. Desert Drink is become popular with both sexes, an unusal phenomenon for a party drink. Whereas drink selection at South Side, Chicago parties has historically been divided between beer for males and fruitier mixed drinks for females, Desert Drink has become a constant choice for both due to its sweet taste and hard-hitting alcoholic effects. OPPOSITION AND HIP HOP ORIGINS Much like the cola wars, Desert Drink is perceived as the main opponent against Texas's Purple Drink . It is generally agreed that while Purple Drink packs a much more powerful incapacitating effect, Desert Drink is the common, poor man's drink. Desert Drink's cheap nature allows a much greater volume of consumption. The most common symptom of excess Desert Drink consumption are mirages. When someone is in a mirage, it is difficult to understand them as their speech is slurred. The first Desert Drink reference was in the early 90's by the LA based rap group Freestyle Fellowship . In an underground mix tape, Self Jupiter freestyles: "Won't let me hit if from behind/ Fuck what you think/ Screw your ass up/ off that dirty desert drink. METAPHOR EXPLORATION In the same way Thomas De Quincey explored his love of opium in his 1822 work " Confessions Of An English Opium-Eater ," Desert Drink inspires creative output. As one poet puts it "Awash in the Desert, each ascent of the dune springs eternal hope, yet at the summit only emptiness is found." ALTERNATIVES Several variations of Desert Drink have recently sprung up out of obscurity. Most notably, people have begun using other iced teas such as Ssips Ice Tea and Snapple . Premium vodkas, such as Grey Goose Vodka and Skyy Vodka are occasionally substituted in, though not frequently. Ultimately, the high prices of the alternative iced teas and vodkas detract from Desert Drink's economical and alcoholic value while adding nothing new to the taste. |
