Danville High School, commonly called DHS, is one of two high schools in Danville. It is a public school, and the other school is the private, Catholic , high school is Schlarman High School , {Link without Title} . DHS is one of the larger high schools in Illinois. It has a distinguished history, and has seen many students grow up to be successful and famous in later life. The school's nickname is ''The Vikings''. DHS is a member of Danville District 118, which includes two middle schools and several elementary schools. Among the numerous success stories to pass through the halls of DHS are world-famous actors, educators, writers, sports stars, and even an astronaut. They include record producer Irving Azoff , Hollywood celebrities such as Dick Van Dyke , his Emmy -winning brother Jerry Van Dyke , Oscar winner Donald O'Connor , and two-time Oscar winner Gene Hackman . Other notable people include Herbal Mystery Writer Susan Wittig Albert and NASA Astronaut Joseph R. Tanner . John Scopes , defendant of the infamous Scopes Monkey Trial , was both a student and a teacher at DHS. After college, Scopes moved back to Danville to teach his first year of school there, just before moving to Dayton, Tennessee , where he made history for teaching Evolution . EXTERNAL LINK |
