(Даниловград) is a town and municipality situated in the pleasant plain of
Bjelopavlići in
Montenegro .
Danilovgrad was founded with the purpose of being the capital of Montenegro. However, after the liberation of
Niksic and
Podgorica which slowed down its significance.It got it's name after it's creator
Prince Danilo . However fundaments to this little city were made first by
King Nikola I in 1870. Famous attraction is the well of
Glava Zete it's located in the vicinity of the city. Today, Danilovgrad covers the space of 501 square kilometers with about 15 000 inhabitants. There are the Art galleries, Historical museums, and a rich library in Danilovgrad. The most significant sacral monument is the monastery Zdrebaonik ,this monastery is 2km from the city and its founder is Nemanja’s son
Vukan .
Several kilometers from Danilovgrad, towards the city
Niksic , there is one of the major
Serbian Orthodox sacred places - a monastery called
Ostrog - built high up into vertical rocks. The monastery was founded by
Vasilije Jovanovic (
St. Vasilije Ostroski ), the Metropolitan of Herzegovina in 1671. It is the unique ensemble of cave churches and wall-paintings.
