Cutting (in Line)

ETIQUETTE

This act, while generally frowned upon by most people, has developed a set of rules to allow for "fair" cutting.
These include asking for:
  • "Cuts", or "Cut-sies"- permission to enter ahead of the person that was asked.

  • "Back Cuts", or "Back Cut-sies"- permission to enter behing the person that was asked. (Usually used as the next-best option after a "Cuts" request is denied.)

These simple rules are important for deflecting the almost inevitable criticism from the people in front of which the cut was made. One can simply state that either "cuts" or "back cuts" were given, and the dispute is settled. Unfortunately, this technique may not always work. (See Consequences.)

The appropriate negative response to one of these requests is generally a recitation of the rhyming phrase: "No cuts, no butts, no coconuts!". However, a simple "no" is also effective.

COVERT CUTTING

In lieu of following the procedure mentioned above, some will cut in line by joining up with family members or friends. This action is usually more acceptable, but can still be considered "cutting". Many times, this action is purely out of convenience, when one member of the group "saves a place" for the other members, especially when the wait is lengthy. However, this is not always the case.

PREVAILING OPINIONS

Cutting in line is usually viewed with disdain, due to the "wait your turn" aspect of a Line/queue . As waiting for a long period of time is usually unpleasant, many feel that those who cut in line are attempting to achieve the same experience at the end of the Line/queue without suffering along with the rest of the group. Therefore, a '''"Cutter"''' is generally considered selfish and disrespectful.
If a cut is performed by following the above-mentioned rules, both the cutter and the person whose permission was requested may be looked upon with derision, especially if a "back cut" was performed, as this shows a lack of respect for those behind from the cutting enabler.

CONSEQUENCES

Some cutters recieve retribution, ranging from being forced to the end of the Line/queue to being physically abused. The severity of the consequences for cutting in line generally depend on several factors, including:
  • The length of the wait (chronologically)

  • The position of the cut (i.e.: how close it is to the front)

  • The popularity of the cutter
