Computer To Plate

This compares with the older technology, Computer to Film ( CTF ), where the computer file is output onto a transparent film. This film is then used to expose a printing plate, in a similar manner to Photographic Film .

COMPARISON OF CTP AND CTF

The advantage of CTP is that it removes one stage from the printing process. This creates a shorter Workflow and also means the final image is one generation closer to the original (ie is the result of fewer successive copies), giving a sharper result. Film can also move on the plate as it is being placed for exposure, so CTP ensures better positioning of the image.

Being transparent, film is also straightforward to proofread after Color Separation : the different films for a given page are simply overlaid on a light box, revealing the complete page and any gross errors (eg a missing illustration or text). In the CTP environment, such proofing can be done on the computer monitor or by outputting a digital proof on a digital printer or proofing device.

CTP has been gaining ground over CTF as DTP applications improve, particularly with the advent of Portable Document Format (PDF).
