The way a CIE is used depends largely on the market it serves. In some cases it may be put together as a research tool, allowing users to survey properties and amass useful statistics. In other cases it may be solely a marketing engine for property listings, allowing a place for buyers and sellers to meet. CIEs are generally administered by an association of real estate professionals, or a commercial real estate brokerage. They vary in scope between local, regional, and national.
