Information About

Colton Pitonyak

Pitonyak was allegedly a frequent drug user and sometime dealer of Cocaine , and at the time of the murder there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest for failure to appear in court over a possession charge incurred the previous summer.

THE MURDER

The details surrounding Cave and Pitonyak's inital relationship are sketchy. According to a police affadavit, on the night of August 16 Jennifer Cave called her mother, Sharon Cave , with excited news about her new job at a law firm. She also mentioned that she was having dinner with a man identified at that time only as "Colton". The following morning, on Wednesday, August 17 , Jennifer Cave's law firm called Sharon Cave to report that she had not shown up for work. Sharon Cave called Jennifer's roommate who told her that Jennifer had not returned the previous night from her dinner with Pitonyak. Sharon Cave then filed a missing person's report with the Austin Police Department.

The police contacted two of the last three people Cave had called on her cell phone, but no definite leads on her whereabouts were concluded, and Pitonyak could not be found at his apartment for questioning. Her car was found parked in the Orange Tree complex's lot. A detective on the case gave Sharon Cave and her boyfriend, Jim Sedwick , the address to Pitonyak's apartment. The couple drove from Corpus Christi, Texas to investigate on their own.

After knocking on the door of the apartment and receiving no reply, Sedwick and Cave called the police but were told the situation lacked the urgency required for forced entry. Sedwick told police that he was concerned for Jennifer's safety and decided to force entry himself.

After crawling in through an accessible front window, Sedwick noticed a foul smell coming from the apartment's bathroom. Upon following it, he found the brutally dismembered body of a woman that would later be identified as Jennifer Cave.
