The term coal measures is also used to describe a succession of Sedimentary Rock s ranging in thickness from a metre or so to a few thousand metres, that consists of mainly clastic rocks ( Claystone s, Shale s, Siltstone s, Sandstone s, Conglomerates ), and Limestone s that are interstratified with beds of Coal . Such succession occur worldwide and may not necessarily be Carboniferous in age.
