Coal Measures




The term coal measures is also used to describe a succession of Sedimentary Rock s ranging in thickness from a metre or so to a few thousand metres, that consists of mainly clastic rocks ( Claystone s, Shale s, Siltstone s, Sandstone s, Conglomerates ), and Limestone s that are interstratified with beds of Coal . Such succession occur worldwide and may not necessarily be Carboniferous in age. For example the Permian coal measures of Australia and the late Cretaceous and early Tertiary coal measures found in New Zealand .
