Cliveden Set

The ''Cliveden Set'' tag was applied at the time by Claud Cockburn in his journalism for ''The Week''. It has long been widely accepted that this clique was in favour of the appeasement of Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany . Norman Rose has written a study, and proposes that, when gathered at Cliveden, it functioned more like a '' Think-tank '' than a '' Cabal ''.
Christopher Sykes, in his detailed biography of Nancy, Lady Astor (London, Collins, 1972),alleges that the entire story about the so-called Cliveden Set and its sinister activities, was a scurrilous myth concocted by Claud Cockburn and picked up by a public looking for scapegoats for British pre-war dallying with Adolf Hitler. Sykes has examined a huge range of evidence with great care and appears to have made a convincing case, notwithstanding his evident desire to put the Astors in a good light.
