wearing a shirt revealing cleavage décolleté.]] Cleavage is the partial exposure of a woman's Breasts , and/or the cleft between them ( Intermammary Sulcus ), particularly when exposed by low-cut clothing. The relevant dimensions in cleavage are the neckline (distance from the neck), armhole (distance in from the armpit), and cutoff line (distance from the point below the breasts). Cleavage as we know it first appeared in Europe in the late 15th century with Bodice s and Corset s that flattened the lower part of the breast and pushed up the upper part. By the 16th century women were stuffing handkerchiefs and rabbit fur into bodices to enhance cleavage and apparent bust size. Technology did not significantly advance until the 1820s with the invention of 'mechanical' corsets, enabling women to tighten them without the assistance of servants. Cleavage was out of fashion during the 1920s Flapper look. It returned in the 1940s with the Sweater Girl look popularized by Actress Lana Turner and again in the 1950s with the trinity of Marilyn Monroe , Jane Russell , and Mamie Van Doren .
