The Circle of Magic quartet were the first four books in the series written by Pierce. They introduce the four main characters as 10-year-olds.
- Book 1- or The Magic in the Weaving (UK) ( 1997 ) The four children recover from their disastrous lives and move to Discipline. After just starting lessons, the four must spin themselves together to save their home from an earthquake.
- Book 2- or The Power in The Storm (UK) ( 1998 ) Things are finally settling down and the four have become friends. Then, Tris's cousin, Aymery, suddenly enters Winding Circle. When Tris finds that her cousin is a pirate, she and her friends must defend their life from a cutthroat band of pirates.
- Book 3- or The Fire in the Forging (UK) ( 1998 ) On a trip to the north, Daja meets her past: members of the very culture that banished her. A careless mage fails to stop a forest fire, and it's up to "Daj" to save her clan and make the final decision: to move on or to fall back with her fellow Traders.
- Book 4- The Healing in the Vine (UK) ( 1999 ) A terrible unknown disease has fallen over Summersea. Briar, Tris, and Rosethorn are called upon to help find a cure only to find it has magical origins. Rosethorn and one of Briar's best friends falls prey to the blue pox, and Briar must save Rosethorn before it's too late.
The students are now 14-year-old fully qualified mages travelling the world, but they believe they're still too young to teach. Unfortunately, the descision is not up to them. Each of the four finds someone with magic and according to the rules they must become the teacher until a more suitable one can be found. Each of the four also encounters a series of crimes they feel obligated to stop, and they must balance their teaching responsibilities with aiding the law.
- Book 1- ( 2000 ) Sandry finds a rare dance mage who is unwilling to accept his power due to family heritage and must convince him to train his magic, at the same time helping her great-uncle to solve the puzzling mystery of a series of clan murders.
- Book 2- ( 2001 ) Briar finds a street girl with magical rock powers. But in a land of gangs, no mage is safe. Evvy is tracked down by a dangerous gang called the Vipers, and Briar must balance his new respectable life with his old street life while stopping the gangs.
- Book 3- ( 2002 ) Daja finds twin mages, each specializing in a different housework power. Daja, fortunately, does not have to teach them their powers, just how to sit straight long enough to concentrate on meditation. But when you put a hyperactive girl and a shy one together, nothing works. On top of all this, Daja must stop an insane arsonist from wiping out the city.
- Book 4- ( 2003 ) Tris meets a glass mage with a dangerous power: lightning. A thirty-year-old man just as stubborn as Tris, Kethlun won't accept Tris or any of her teachings. But when Kethlun's closest friends and a whole occupation is suddenly attacked, Keth and Tris must work together in a land where no tracking is possible.
- ( 2005 ) When the circle reunites at age 18, they find they no longer hold a special bond. But when Sandry is invited to her greedy relatives in the north for a visit, all of them go surprisingly. But evil is afoot in the land of Empress Berenene, and the four must find their circle in time to stop it.
- A continuation of Briar, Rosethorn, and Evvy's trip to Yanjing has been scheduled for 2009 .
- In 2007 , a book detailing Tris sneaking into Lightsbridge and pretending to be an academic mage will be published.
- ( 2006 ) Rosethorn and Evvy travel to an island to find out the problem with a series of suddenly dying wildlife. But when Evvy finds out there is an active volcano on the island, things start to go from bad to worse.
- - a.k.a. Sandry, A teenager of royal descent with the power to weave magic itself, not just thread.
- -Lark, who has thread magic, is Sandry's teacher at Winding Circle.
- -A young boy with magic dancing powers.
- -Former street thief with plant magic.
- -Rosethorn is Briar's teacher at Winding Circle, with power over plants as well.
- - a.k.a. Evvy, another former street thief with rock magics.
- - a.k.a. Tris, A teenager from a merchant family who has strange weather powers.
- - a.k.a. Niko, An old roamer with vision powers who instructs Tris.
- - a.k.a. Keth, A middle-aged man with glass and lightning powers.
- -A former sea trader with amazing control over smithing.
- -A fiery blacksmith who teaches Daja.
- -Twins in the freezing north. Nia has woodworking powers, while Jory is an amazing cook.
