Christmas City Walkway Of Lights

The City of Marion, Indiana annually holds a public Celebration during the Christmas Season known as the Walkway of Lights.

The Walkway of Lights operates each year from the Saturday prior to Thanksgiving until New Year's Day . The annual City of Marion Christmas Parade, held the Saturday prior to Thanksgiving , is considered the kick-off event for the Walkway of Lights. The lights are illuminated daily at sunset.

The lights form a driving path along the left bank of the Mississinewa River , from the heart of downtown Marion to nearby Matter Park . A significant portion of the path is also along a footpath along the river bank, and limited parking is available should one desire to get out and walk on foot. Most motorists proceed very slowly, 15-20 mph, along the lighted drive, and choosing to extinguish Headlights is an accepted practice.

There is no charge to drive along the 2-mile stretch of lights. However, volunteers take turn various civic groups manning a voluntary Donation booth at the entrance to Matter Park. Volunteers hand out maps to the sponsored displays and Candy Canes for the occcupants of each vehicle. Additionally, there is a Christmas City Walkway of Lights Gift Shop at which one can stop and purchase Souvenirs .

Most light displays are sponsored by area businesses or organizations. The lights focus, naturally, on the Christian celebration of Christmas , but usually the local Jewish community also sponsors a light display for Channukah .
