As of 2003 , the town has an estimated Population of 7,371 and the Density of 138.32 persons per Km² . The total area is 53.29 km². Sugar cane, potatoes and peanuts farming are popular. Flower farming is also popular. There is a small Japanese Military Base present with radar / communications installation. One of two towns is on Okinoerabu Island.
