Formerly, Meigs Field was another minor Chicago airport. In 2003, it was closed by Mayor Richard M. Daley in a nighttime coup. Though a relatively small airstrip, Meigs Field was unique for its proximity to Chicago's downtown, and was one of the busiest airstrips for private planes in the world. The land was to be converted into a lakeside park, although recent proposals suggest that a new airstrip and aviation museum may be opened alongside a park.
