Information About

Cheaphack

The goal of CheapHack was to have an engine that's meant to pack a few more eye candy features while maintaining compatibilty and speed with slower computers. The engine is playable on a Pentium 100MHz with a 3dfx Voodoo 2 video card and 32mb of system RAM.

Notable features:
  • "Proper" detail texturing, blended correctly and taking advantage of multitexturing. A tutorial was written in 2002 for implementing this as well (It made its way into several engines at the time, including Telejano )

  • Particle system allowing both additive blend and alpha blend particles

  • Particle system supporting external textures rather than hardcoded (before CheapHack in 2001, I used a BSP texture hack for TomazQuake to force load replacement textures over the hardcoded particles)

  • Broken multiplayer, possibly due to the inclusion of Globot.

  • Flare sprite effects such as on torches, blinding flares from apocalypse explosions and gamma beams (in a certain mod that uses them)

  • "Cubemapped water" effects that try to mimic Unreal Tournament 2003 's shiny water, however it would use a loaded mapshot for a reflection rather than a custom-made cubemap].

  • MIDI support by CD track number

  • Custom particle laser SVC effect, which of course is unused and is also a non-QSG standard.
