The Loebner Prize is the first formal instantiation of a Turing Test . It is sponsored, and sometimes run by, Hugh Loebner. Each year an annual prize of $2000 and a bronze medal is awarded to the most human computer, with $100,000 and a Gold Medal being awarded if the bot manages to totally convince the judges that it is human (using audio-visual input). It takes place in the real world (at varying venues), with the bots forbidden from accessing the web. It has been running since 1990. The ChatterBox Challenge is an annual chatterbot contest offering money and awards to contestants in several different categories. Unlike the Loebner prize, this competition is designed to be easy to enter. It takes place on the web, and the bots themselves may be on the web, downloadable or available via ICQ, MSN or some other messenger service. Over 100 bots per year take part.
