The bog is north of the River Irwell , five miles west of Manchester , and almost twelve square miles in area. It is thought to be about 7,000 years old. The bog threatened the completion of the Liverpool And Manchester Railway , until George Stephenson succeeded in constructing a railway line which "floated" on a wood and stone foundation in 1829 . Parts of it are used today for farming. In 1993 , the British composer Peter Maxwell Davies wrote a piece for school orchestra titled ''Chat Moss''. |
