CEH is one of four environmental research organisations wholly-owned by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), along with the British Geological Survey , the British Antarctic Survey and the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory . The single organisation CEH was established in 1994 from the combination of nine existing NERC research centres. CEH operates from nine sites across the UK: Monks Wood, Wallingford, Edinburgh, Lancaster, Dorset, Banchory, Bangor, Oxford, and Swindon. Scientific research within CEH is directed across these sites under six thematic programmes: water, climate change, sustainable economies, biogeochemistry, biodiversity and environmental informatics.
