Casualty Characters

This article lists the characters from the BBC television series Casualty .

BARBARA 'BAZ' WILDER

"Baz" Wilder made regular appearances on the show over a period of eighteen years.

In series one Baz had a string of relationships, culminating in her pregnancy by Charge Nurse Charlie Fairhead . She secretly aborted the child and their relationship consequently collapsed.

Baz returned to Holby towards the end of Series 9 accompanied by her new husband Peter Hayes. She and Charlie attempted to keep their relationship strictly professional but they could not contain their feelings for each other and sought a physical relationship.

Baz's marriage to Peter had always been unstable and ended following her pregnancy with Charlie's love child. Divorced, Baz married Charlie in a wedding ceremony which saw four former Casualty stars reprising their roles.

The marriage did not last and Baz ultimately fled to Canada, taking their child Louis with them. They were reunited briefly when Baz returned in series 18, but she perished in a car accident.

Baz was played by Julia Watson .

CHARLIE FAIRHEAD

Charlie Fairhead is the only original character left in the long-running TV Series "Casualty".

Over the last twenty years Charlie has served as the hospital's Nurse Manager. He has always demonstrated a passion for the patient's welfare and a strong sense of medical ethics.

Charlie has always shown tremendous nobility: in the opening scene of the first episode of Casualty, Charlie arrived in a wreck of a car; it transpired he had sold his superior car to pay for his mother's operation.

Charlie has had had various on-screen relationships over the years. The love of his life though was Barbara "Baz" Wilder - another original character. Baz left Casualty after the first season but returned nearly a decade later. Trapped in an unhappy marriage she pursued a relationship with Charlie, ultimately becoming pregnant with their child Louis. Baz divorced her husband and married Charlie. The marriage however was later dissolved.

Baz briefly returned to the series to be by the bedside of her dying father and was tragically killed herself.

Charlie himself has been brushed with death on several occasions including a shooting, a near hit and run, a coronary embolism and most recently an attempted drowning. He recently returned to the series after a six month sabbatical.

Charlie is played by Derek Thompson .

EWART PLIMMER

Ewart Plimmer was one of the original Casualty characters. He was the original consultant. During his three years in the show Ewart demonstrated a dedication to the job which cost him his marriage and his relationship with his daughter. Ultimately he died in the third season after his second heart attack.

Ewart was played by Bernard Gallagher .

HARRY HARPER

Harry Harper is a Consultant. He is currently the fourth longest serving character in the series. Harry is extremely competent at his job and rules the department with a rod of iron. His personal demons though have caused him a lot of problems. His wife Beth died prematurely in a car crash. This led to him self-prescribing medication which nearly cost him his job and squandering his wife's life insurance.

Harry's daughter Natalya "Tally" was introduced to the series. Tally gave Harry more heartache. The death of Beth had driven a wedge between them as Harry refused to talk about the matter as he blamed himself and Tally became increasingly convinced that he blamed her for Beth's death. Her relationship with womanising Simon Kamenski enraged Harry further due to the considerable age difference and Simon's previous treatment of women. When Simon ended the relationship Tally tried to kill herself. This forced Harry to accept that he had to spend some quality time with his daughter and talk about Beth.

Recently Harry has started a relationship with a considerably younger married nurse and colleague, Ellen. This culminated in the conception of his sixth child and their engagement. Ellen however decided not to marry him ultimately and a recent scan revealed it was in fact a

Harry is played by Simon MacCorkindale .

JOSH GRIFFITHS

Josh Griffiths is a paramedic.
Over the last seventeen years Josh has saved countless lives, risked his own life on many occasions and endured endless personal trauma.
Josh's deepest personal trauma was when a fire ripped through his house. His daughter was the only person rescued from the wreckage. His wife and son were killed instantaneously, whilst his daughter Sarah later died in hospital.

Josh's trauma affected him badly, causing him to become a compulsive gambler (which resulted in him accumulating excessive debts) and later becoming infertile.
Josh has since struggled to find love. He married Collette but his marriage collapsed after discovering she was pregnant with a child that had been conceived during an illicit affair. His most recent date proved a disaster as he prepared a meal of Duck for a vegetarian and had his overflowing bath fall through the ceiling and collapse on him.

Josh commands a lot of respect from his forever changing staff. The paramedic he had the closest friendship with was Finlay "Fin" Newton (who was tragically murdered). Their friendly banter proved so popular they were granted their own special episode which focused on their shift.
Josh has risked his own life on many occasions and nearly died in a landslide in season 15. Thankfully he survived.
In recent years, ''Casualty'' has become more focused on life in the hospital due to problems with filming caused by the increasing number of episodes, and the paramedics are sadly underused. However Josh is still saving lives and most recently climbed through a broken garage window to save a man who was attempting suicide.

Josh is played by Ian Bleasdale .

SANDRA MUTE

Sandra Mute was one of the original characters. Sandra was also the show's first female paramedic. Her stint in the show was fairly eventful including her relationship with her married paramedic partner Andrew Ponting. Tragically she was stabbed to death in the second season.

Sandra was played by Lisa Bowerman
