Carnauba Wax





COMPOSITION

Carnauba wax contains mainly Ester s of Fatty Acid s (80-85%), Fatty Alcohol s (10-15%), acids (3-6%) and Hydrocarbon s (1-3%). Specific for carnauba wax is the content of esterified fatty Diol s (about 20%), hydroxylated fatty acids (about 6%) and Cinnamic Acid (about 10%). Cinnamic acid, an Antioxidant , may be hydroxylated or methoxylated.


USES


Carnauba wax is a prominent ingredient is cosmetic formulas: lipsticks, eyeliners, mascara, eye shadows, foundations, blushers, skin care preparations, sun care preparations, etc.

Carnauba wax can produce a glossy finish and as such is used in Automobile waxes, Shoe Polish es and floor and furniture Polishes , especially mixed with Beeswax . Use for coatings of paper is the most common application within the United States.

It is also the main ingredient in Surfboard Wax , when combined with Coconut Oil .

As a Glazing Agent in foods, it finds use particularly in shiny-shelled candies such as M&M's and Tic Tacs , and in some Chocolate s. Swedish Fish are made out of Carnauba Wax. It is also used in Cosmetic industry as a component of creams and Lipstick s, and in the pharmaceutical industry as a tablet coating agent.

It is practically insoluble in water, soluble on heating in ethyl acetate and in xylene, practically insoluble in alcohol.
