Information About

Carlton Dramatic Society

It was formed by a group of enthusiasts from Wimbledon Park and Southfields in 1927 . During the Second World War its activities were suspended, but in 1946 the group returned to the stage in a production of Agatha Christie 's '' Ten Little Niggers '' (using the original title).

Following the 1963 production of the Morality Play '' Everyman '' at various churches around the South East of England, including St Paul’s in Covent Garden and St Matthew’s in Slough , came an invitation to perform the play in St George's Chapel , Windsor Castle . The single performance was on Maundy Thursday , 1963 and the entire UK Royal Family , who were spending Easter at Windsor, were present. The cast was presented afterwards and the Queen told the cast that she had been 'very moved'.

The Carlton's membership of around 60 adults continue to perform regularly in and around Wimbledon, mainly at the New Wimbledon Studio Theatre , performing classics like Shakespeare and Molière as well as original works.

The President of the Society is June Whitfield .
