Capital Punishment In Japan

Between 1946 and 2003, Japanese courts sentenced 766 people to death, 608 of whom were executed. During 40 months from 1989 to 1993, the successive ministers of justice refused to authorise exectutions, which amounted to an informal moratorium.

In November 2005, the new Minister Of Justice announced that, "out of personal conviction", no death sentence would be carried out during his mandate.
