Constituency represented in the
House Of Commons of the
Parliament Of The United Kingdom . It elects one
Member Of Parliament (MP) by the
First Past The Post system of election. The constituency has elected only Conservative MPs since
1874 , the longest any current UK constituency has remained under the control of one party.
Canterbury constituency comprises the larger part of the
City Of Canterbury District, containing the City and surrounding villages, together with the coastal town of
Whitstable , but excluding the town of
Herne Bay which is in the
North Thanet constituency.
Following their review of parliamentary representation in
Kent , the
Boundary Commission For England has made major changes to the existing constituencies to deal with population changes across the county.
The modified Canterbury constituency is formed from the following electoral wards from within the city of Canterbury;
- Barham Downs, Barton, Blean Forest, Chartham and Stone Street, Chestfield and Swalecliffe, Gorrell, Harbledown, Harbour, Little Stour, North Nailbourne, Northgate, St Stephens, Seasalter, Sturry North, Sturry South, Tankerton, Westgate, and Wincheap
