Campsie has a mixture of suburban residential and retail development, the latter situated on or near Beamish Street. Campsie is approximately 11 kilometres south-west of Sydney's Central Business District . To the east is the suburb of Canterbury , to the north is the Cooks River and the suburbs of Croydon Park and Ashbury , to the south is Kingsgrove , and to the west is Belfield and Belmore HISTORY Indigenous Australians lived in this area for thousand of years. In 1770, the land along the Cooks River was explored by officers from HM Bark Endeavour . A Railway was completed in 1895 encouraging Suburban Development and leading to the area becoming heavily populated. The Town Hall of the Municipality Of Canterbury was moved to Campsie in 1962. TRANSPORT Beamish Street runs north-south for 1.6 kilometres and is charactorised by retail and commercial development over most of its length. Canterbury Road is a major Arterial route, 11 kilometres long and connecting the inner suburbs of Sydney with Bankstown and suburbs further to the south-west. Campsie Railway Station is located on the Bankstown Line of the CityRail Network . The line was opened in 1895 and electrified in 1926. Two additional tracks were laid for goods traffic. POLITICAL REPRESENTATION Campsie is part of Central Ward of the City Of Canterbury and together with Belmore and Lakemba elects three councillors to the City Council . For New South Wales state elections, the suburb is in the Electoral District of Canterbury . The district includes surrounding suburbs of Canterbury , Earlwood , Hurlstone Park , Croydon Park , western Dulwich Hill , eastern Belfield and northern Turella .
