Calvin Kingsley




Kingsley was born on 8 September , 1812 in Annsville, New York , USA . His family were of early Connecticut history. His parents were not members of any church. Kingsley was Converted at the age of 18 in the Methodist Church of Ellington, New York . His parents later became converted because of his witness, ultimately sending two sons into the ministry.

Kingsley worked as a janitor at college, calling himself the "Professor of dust and ashes." He united with the Erie Conference of the M.E. Church in 1841. In 1844 Kingsley successfully debated someone of the Universalist faith.

Prior to his election to the Episcopacy , Kingsley served as a Pastor and an Editor . He was elected at the same time as Bishops Clark and Thomson, all three of whom died in their first Quadrennium of episcopal leadership. Kingsley died following a trip to the Holy Land with a group which included Frances Willard .

Kinglsley died on April 6 , 1870 in Beirut , Syria (now Lebanon ). He was buried in Beirut in the Russian Protestant Cemetery, where the Methodist Church erected a monument in his memory.
