Cairo International Airport is an Airport in Cairo , Egypt . It is a hub of EgyptAir . It is located on the outskirts of Cairo, approximately 20 minutes by car to one of the center gathering points in the city (Talaat Harb).

In 2004, the airport served 9,534,069 passengers (+14.4% vs. '03).

TERMINALS

Terminal 1

Terminal 1 is known as the Old Airport. Terminal 1 is currently serving EgyptAir in its international flights.

Terminal 1 was built as early as 1945 . During WWII, the American Bayn Field air-force base was established five kilometers far from Almaza Airport to serve the Alliance during War. The American forces left the base by the end of the war. The Civil Aviation Authority took over the base and allocated it to the International Civil Aviation.

In 1963, Cairo International Airport replaced the old Heliopolis Airport located at the Hike-Step area in the East of Cairo.

Halls include Departure Hall 1, International Hall 3, Hall 4 for Private & Non-commercial Aircraft Services.

Within the recent upgrading and facility improvement scheme, CAC demolished the old hall 3, previously used for domestic arrival & departure flights, to reconstruct a new hall, to be assigned for International Arrivals.

From the perspective of upgrading the Airports City. Concept to provide an array of services and entertainment facilities, A new shopping mall called "The AirMall" has been constructed near Terminal 1's New International Arrival Hall 3; the mall will serve both passengers, airport visitors as well as the general public within the Heliopolis and Nasr City .

Terminal 2

Terminal 2 is known as the New Airport. It was inaugerated in 1986. It has two halls, one for arrival and the other for departure and they are not separated. There are duty free shops in the airport in the transit area and a cafeteria in the departure area. There is also a new restaurant that opened in 2005 in the small area separating the arrival and departure halls.

One problem with the terminal is its limited size which causes discomfort for passengers when more than 3 planes check in at the same time or more than 2 planes arrive at the same time. There are only 4 luggage trays.

Terminal 3

A future expansion plan is the construction of Terminal 3 which will open in July 2007. It will be located adjacent to Terminal 2, and the two terminals will be connected by a bridge. On this purpose, the access roads will be redesigned, and the changes will also involve the relocation of the parking lots.

The plan shall include:
  • A Three-Level main building with mezzanines, of 164.000 m2 resembled in arrivals/ departures halls, basement facilities, baggage handling, workshops, Electro-mechanical area, and retail outlets.

  • Two piers of extendible capacity and gates facilities serving domestic and international traffic, handled through contact and remote. The main building and the piers are connected by concourses.

  • Land side works including bridges and fly-over serving the traffic to and from the terminal building, surface car park areas, a new access road connecting the airport with the Autostrad road and upgrading the access road from Salah Salem Road .

  • Upon the completition of this terminal, Cairo International Airport will double its airport capacity, enabling it to provide passengers & airlines with state-of-the art services and facilities.

TRANSPORTATION

A free Cairo Airport Authority shuttle bus links the two terminals, 3km (1.9 miles) apart. The bus runs throughout the night and departs approximately every 30 minutes.
