The city's name is pronounced differently from ). Although Cairo is Nickname d the "Syrup City" it has no relationship with the popular Karo brand of Corn Syrup , which is pronounced the same way. GEOGRAPHY Cairo is located at 30°52'40" North, 84°12'32" West (30.877803, -84.208877). According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 24.3 Km&2 (9.4 Mi&2 ). 24.1 km&2 (9.3 mi&2) of it is land and 0.1 km&2 (0.1 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 0.53% water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 9,239 people, 3,465 households, and 2,456 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 383.2/km&2 (992.0/mi&2). There were 3,898 housing units at an average density of 161.7/km&2 (418.5/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 43.99% White , 51.30% African American , 0.42% Native American , 0.57% Asian , 0.02% Pacific Islander , 2.80% from Other Races , and 0.89% from two or more races. 5.05% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 3,465 households out of which 34.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.4% were Married Couples living together, 24.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% were non-families. 25.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.14. In the city the population was spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 83.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.6 males. The median income for a household in the city was $23,054, and the median income for a family was $30,352. Males had a median income of $29,063 versus $20,542 for females.
