This is not to say that buses are any more dangerous than other motor vehicles, which are involved in enough serious accidents that approximately 48,000 people are killed and more than three million people are injured in such accidents every year just in the United States. The perception is that the media tends to describe accidents involving buses as having plunged more often than other motor vehicles. The term may be a sort of self perpetuating Meme in that once the concept is introduced into the popular vocabulary its usage becomes expected, and as such writers feel almost obliged to use it in connection with any mishaps involving buses. Another example currently found in the news media is the usage of the word ''rushed'' in connection to how victims of an accident may be transported to the hospital regardless of actual injury.
