BUILDING WATCHING: AS A HOBBY Learning to search for and recognize architectural styles can be as interesting, challenging, and rewarding as birding, but without the retrictions that apply to that and most other hobbies. 1.WEATHER/SEASONS: -- Buildings don't migrate or hibernate. -- Observation can normally be made from a car in any season and weather. In fact, many buildings can be observed better when the leaves are off the trees. 2. PEOPLE: -- There are no restrictions re: age, sex,size, nationality or colour. -- It's fun to do whether alone or in the company of others who share your interest.. -- Chat to the house owners. Most are proud of their homes and are only too anxious to show them to you. 3. LOCATION: -- The hobby can be pursued in a village, town, city or country. -- If you travel, don't limit your search to Canada. While some styles, like the Georgian, are fairly international, most nations have unique architecture of their own, such as Portugal with its Manueline. 4. COSTS: -- There are almost no costs unless you want to include your gas, coffee, meals, clothings, etc. If you get serious about the hobby, you might want to add a digit camera and a miniature tape recorder to record your specific finds. 5. OTHER BUILDINGS: -- Although I've been talking strictly about homes. BUILDING WATCHING can certainly expand to include; churches, government buildings of all types, commercial buildings, hotels, mills, barns, bridges, even lighthouses.It's whatever catches YOUR imagination. -- some styles, such as the Gothic Revival, appear in many of the above. 6. RECORDING: -- You can 'collect buildings' in various ways; chronological, historical, local, by country, climatic zones, etc. I am personally driven to find the purest/most accurate versions. -- 'Recoding' your sittings can be accomplished by prints, slides, sketches, mini-tape recorder, etc. 7. MENTALLY CHALLENGING: -- You can approach BUILDING WATCHING from many levels. The degree to which you pursue the hobby is entirely dependent upon your interest and physical capabilities. -- It gives you a reason to investigate that nearby city, travel that country lane, or to return to you roots and see what still exists. In every instance you're going to be mentally involved, AND THAT MAKES LIFE A WHOLE LOT RICHER! |
