BUILDING DESIGN Draftsperson (Documenter) A Draftsperson (Documenter) or ''' Documenter ''' is somone who has completed a certificate or Diploma in drafting, and is generally employed in a drafting office or architectural firm. Initially they would begin as a trainee, doing odd jobs in the office, and drawing up working drawings ( Floor Plan /Elevations/Sections) from sketch plans of designs generally designed by those higher up in the ranks. As they work their way up and develop more expirience, they'd eventually become a Draftsperson or somtimes known as a Documenter. The type of work involved at this level can be anything from design to the documentation of projects. A draftsperson is generally somone who is not a registered building practitioner, and who works under one. Some draftspersons after gaining a few years expirience will proceed to become a registered building practitioner, and either become self employed, or start their own drafting office in time. Building Designer In Australia, a Building Designer is somone who has completed a Diploma or advanced diploma in drafting, and is generally self employed, or running their own Drafting Office . Initially they would start out Self Employed , working from a Home Office , undertaking all the design and Documentation of all projects, and eventually may wish to run their own drafting office. The type of work involved covers everything from meeting with clients and designing, to producing working drawings and documenting the project, to achieve a standard of drawings capable of obtaining building and planning permits for their client. Buildings are generally restricted to lower density Residential , Commercial and Industrial buildings. A building designer or drafting office or firm can choose to specialise in any area or type of buildings they wish, however, most building designers cover all types of building design and Documentation . Architect An Architect is somone who has completed a Bachelor Degree in Architecture , and is generally self employed, employed in a large architectural firm or is part of a group or partnership with other architects. Initially the course for architecture is expensive and drawn out over several years, and then gaining the expirience to become a fully registered architect is very long and time consuming, a period of 10 to 15 years must be alowed after high school until the time an architect can be fully registered and self employed. The type of work undertaken is almost identical to that of a building designer, however, regulations allow an architect to design higher, this opens up a whole new avenue of the market. Richer clients use architects simply because they can afford them, and architecture is associated more with art and the philosphy of architecture than the practical and budget related aspects of a building. This leads many large companies to employ architects to design a new office or headquarters for them. Also civic structures are architect related for their ability to design the building to make it a work of art. However, a very expirienced and developed building designer can achieve the same artistic flare, on a smaller scale. Building engineer Building Engineers would normally have an accredited Academic Degree with a concentration in building engineering from a recognized university. The completed degree may be designated as a Bachelor Of Engineering , Bachelor Of Science or Bachelor Of Applied Science depending upon the university. Building engineers are trained in all phases of the life cycle of a building and develop an appreciation of the building as an advanced technological system that encompasses many sub-systems and their individual components, and understands the building itself as a large integrated system. Technical problems are identified and appropriate solutions found to improve the performance of the building in areas such as:
