It was sparked off by the accidental shooting by Police of Mrs Cherry Groce while they were seeking her son Michael in relation to armed robbery and suspected that he was hiding in his mother's home. He was not there at the time of the shooting. Mrs Groce was paralysed below the waist by the shot. As word of the shooting spread among the local community, groups gathered, leading to attacks on the local police station, running street battles, looting and burning. The 1985 riot was on lower scale than the 1981 Riot but more severe than the 1995 Riot . SEE ALSO EXTERNAL LINKS
