The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Bredebro. Neighboring municipalities are Tønder and Løgumkloster to the east, Skærbæk to the north, and Højer to the south. To the west is the North Sea . The municipality was created in 1970 as the result of a ''kommunalreform'' ("Municipality Reform") that combined a number of existing parishes:
By January 1 , 2007 Bredebo municipality will cease to exist due to ''Kommunalreformen'' ("The Municipality Reform" Of 2007) . It will be merged with existing Højer , Løgumkloster , Nørre-Rangstrup , Skærbæk , and Tønder municipalities to form the new Tønder municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 1,352 Km&2 and a total population of 42,645 (2005). THE TOWN OF BREDEBRO The town was the original home of the ECCO Shoe manufacturing company.
