A bougie is a long flexible rod-like instrument inserted into the urethra, esophagus, intestines, rectum or anus. The instrument takes its name from the French word for " Candle " because of a similarity in appearance as well as substance. The instrument can be made of various substances, including waxed linen and Gelatin . The gelatin permits the bougie to melt at body temperature. The cylindrical tool can also be made of plastic, rubber or even metal. In addition to dislodging a blockage, a bougie can also be used to widen a shaft or guide another instrument into a shaft. The word "boule" is the French word for "ball;" a "bougie a boule" indicates that the instrument is ball- (or bulb-) tipped. |
