The diocese covers an area of 2,672 km² of County of South Yorkshire , parts of the High Peak and Chesterfield District s of Derbyshire , and the district of Bassetlaw in Nottinghamshire . The See is in the City Of Sheffield where the seat is located at the Cathedral Church Of Saint Marie .

The diocese was erected on 30 May 1980 from the merging of portions of the Dioceses of Leeds and Nottingham . The current bishop is the Right Reverend John Rawsthorne , the 2nd Bishop of Hallam, who was installed on 3 July 1997 .
