Information AboutBishop Carroll High School (alberta) |
Bishop Carroll High School; part of the Calgary Catholic School District in Alberta , Canada ; offers a unique program, that allows students to work at their own pace in an individual environment. Students receive module packages from certain resource rooms and start to work on these packages. The students have a teacher advisor or a TA (Teacher advisor) to look after them and keep them on track in weekly individual meetings. This program is available for students who are in Grade 10, 11 or 12. Bishop Carroll is home to the Bishop Carroll Cardinals. The school is named after the Bishop of Calgary in the mid 1950s. The school welcomes people who are not catholic but they must have a specific purpose for attending. Bishop Carroll promotes itself as a school for everyone, but it takes dedication and concentration to complete your year. If required, students can apply to finish high school in four years, but is most certainly not recommended. EASTER HOLIDAYS Students will be dismissed on Thursday, April 13. Classes resume on Monday April 24th as usual. THE PROGRAM This high school has a program which is fairly unique. Each course is broken up into either 30, 24, 15 or 5 units of work depending on its credit value, 5,4,3,1 respectively. Each unit of work is on a specific topic, and a single assignment is often worth more than one unit. Assignments are completed when the student either writes a test, or submits an assignment for marking. Courses which rely on class time, such as band, are awarded units based on value. Although the program is almost entirely self-paced, a number of seminars must be attended for the completion of most courses. These are usually one hour in length, and can be attended at any time throughout the year. For certain courses, such as applied mathematics, seminars are scheduled throughout the year in order to provide additional guidance. If help is required at any time during school hours, a student may go into the subject resource area they want, and ask a teacher for help. FURTHER ASSISTANCE In Mathematics for example, for the school year of 2005-2006, the math department will be offering a program called "Pilot" or "S Cubed: Structured Seminar Series", in which students who apply can attend a constant flow of seminars. These seminars will always be directed by the same teacher, and attended by the same student body, and will be offered for Math 20, and 30. This eliminates the need for doing math individually, which some students find difficult. Bishop Carroll hones skills pertinent to learning mass amounts of topics in a short time span. THE SCHOOL OF ALBERTA BALLET Bishop Carroll is one of just two Calgary schools, with a special relationship to , 2006 Ballet students at Bishop Carroll and Queen Elizabeth High (in the Public System ) may receive credit towards their diploma, for the instruction they receive ballet school, even though the instruction is done off site.
