Bishop's Method

The Modified (or Simplified) Bishop's Method is an extension of the method of slices for determining slope stability. By making some simplifying assumptions, the problem becomes statically determinate and suitable for hand calculations:

  • shear forces on the sides of each slice are equal

  • normal forces on the sides of each slice are colinear

The method has been shown to produce factor of safety values within a few percent of the "correct" values.
