(born

Staffordshire ,
England ; died
4 March 1974 ) was a
Formula One driver who raced for his own team,
Aston Butterworth . Prior to Formula One he was a test pilot and motorcycle racer. He turned to four-wheel racing with a Cooper-Jap in
Formula Junior and later graduated into
Formula 2 . He came close to winning a race in 1951, but his car failed in the last lap. In the same year he set a 500cc world speed record. For 1952 he teamed up with
Archie Butterworth and built a car that raced quite well, but unfortunately, was very unreliable. He entered the car in the
1952 German Grand Prix but failed on the second lap. In the
Italian Grand Prix he never even made it to qualifying. By the time Aston was in his mid-50s, he retired from the sport.
