She was ranked in the United States top ten in several years during the 1950 s, and reached the No. 1 ranking in 1959. Her game was distinguished partly because she was ambidextrous and played with two forehands. She reached the Wimbledon singles final in 1955, losing to Louise Brough 7-5, 8-6. She also won the French Open doubles title in 1955 (with Darlene Hard ). At the historic tennis tournament in Cincinnati , Baker Fleitz won the singles title in 1950 (defeating Magda Rurac of Romania in the final) and was a singles finalist in 1949 (where she fell to Rurac in the final. She also paired with Rurac to win the doubles title in 1950. She also won the Pacific Southwest Tournament (which is now a men's only event and played in San Jose, California), in 1947, 1955, 1958 and 1959, and the Southern California Championship in 1954, ’55, ’56, ’58. In 1956, she reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals, but was forced to retire from the tournament when she became ill. She was pregnant at the time. She retired permanently from tennis in 1959 and has been inducted into the Southern California Tennis Association Hall of Fame. |
