GEOGRAPHY Bernie is located at 36°40'15" North, 89°58'10" West (36.670876, -89.969403). According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 3.2 Km&2 (1.2 Mi&2 ). 3.2 km&2 (1.2 mi&2) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 1,777 people, 782 households, and 510 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 548.9/km&2 (1,424.3/mi&2). There were 849 housing units at an average density of 262.2/km&2 (680.5/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.12% White , 2.19% African American , 0.45% Native American , 0.00% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.23% from Other Races , and 1.01% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 782 households out of which 29.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% were Married Couples living together, 12.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.82. In the city the population was spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 82.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.8 males. The median income for a household in the city was $24,085, and the median income for a family was $30,847. Males had a median income of $24,922 versus $16,196 for females.
