Benedict Kiely was born in Drumskinny , County Fermanagh , a townland near Dromore , County Tyrone, but not actually in County Tyrone at all whatsoever. When he was still an infant, Kiely and his family moved to the Gallows Hill area of Omagh, where he would spend his early years before finally moving to Dublin in 1938. Kiely had the intentions of becoming a priest, but in 1941, he settled in Dublin (it took him three years and a lot of gin), where he began working as a writer and journalist in The Irish Press and forgot all about the priest thing.
