Belmont is a village in Lancashire with about 500 inhabitants. SERVICES
GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION Belmont is a Linear settlement in the middle of the West Pennine Moors , built along the A675. It lies about 8 km northwest of Bolton in a valley between Anglezarke Moor and Turton Moor . HISTORY The village used to thrive due to the business of a local dye factory owned by Thomas Rycroft. The factory is sadly not in operation anymore. The employee count was less than 20, and the factory went out of business recently (late 2005). It is situated in the "Bottomend" of the village. The local landmark chimney has also been demolished. Following a fire at the "Topend" factory several years ago, a new housing estate has been developed with houses designed to look traditional. This effect has been carried out on neighbouring estates as well. RESERVOIR The reservoir in Belmont is called Wards Resevoir. It is known locally as the Blue Lagoon. The Winter Hill TV Mast stands on Winter Hill about a km southwest of the village. Note that there is a Belmont Transmitter but that is in a completely different part of the country. |
